Abergavenny Community Centre in Park Street hosted its second annual ‘Big Lunch’ on Sunday - attracting scores of people to share plates of food and enjoy the fun, including some families from as far afield as Cardiff.

With all the guests invited to contribute to the communal ‘feast’ there were countless culinary treats to sample and enjoy.

There was music too from the local brass band, a harpist and a lady who arrived with all her drumming equipment and proceeded to give the visitors a ‘master class’.

Before long people were dancing and there were smiles and laughter all round under a beautiful blue sky.

Local resident Stacey White, who photographed the event, said, “I adore this place - the sense of community, the participation and the ability of the people to make something amazing out of nothing.

“The community spirit was evident from the outset, with people pitching in and helping with chairs, tables and the food layout.”

She said one young girl described the event to her as ‘the best party in the world, ever’ and a couple who lived a few doors down had commented on the importance of supporting the local community and told her that they were involved in the Centre’s regular coffee mornings and planned on taking on more responsibility during the summer.

“The atmosphere was one of a calm and well organised event,” she said. “It made everyone feel at ease and aided in the family/community spirit that the event organisers were hoping to achieve.”
