Workers were fighting to clamp a burst water pipe busy streaming a 30ft plume into the air on an Abergavenny residential area, this afternoon.
The stream was pumping out of the ground after a six-inch water pipe got severed during routine maintenance earlier today. Contractors believed to be from Wales and West Utilities were said to be digging up sections of road as part of a gas maintenance campaign when the pipe split, sending a thirty-foot cascade pumping into the air.
One worker said the team had drilled down into the foundations of Cresta Road, before reaching a pipe. They then stopped work, before asking bosses for guidance.
“After that call, I walked around the corner. All of a sudden, I thought it was raining. Which I thought was a bit strange for this weather!” he said.
The plume was still blasting into the air at 4pm today.
A team from Welsh Water arrived at the scene soon after to try and stem the flow.
One onlooker, standing on the corner watching the spectacle, said: “Nice weather for it!” ??
Carl Jones, Wales & West Utilities Operations Controller for South Wales said, “While we’ve been doing gas pipe upgrade work in the Cresta Road area of Abergavenny there has been a water leak. We’re working alongside Dwr Cymru Welsh Water to resolve this, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.”Update: A Dwr Cymru Welsh Water spokesperson said,“A burst occurred on our water main on Cresta Road, Abergavenny, while a third party was working nearby. We immediately sent a team to site to isolate the burst. “The team will be working through the night to complete the repair. We would like to thank customers for bearing with us whilst we complete the repair.”
