Abergavenny residents will have an exciting new place to work out and keep fit after a new Boxing club and gym opened in town this week.
Abergavenny Boxing Club has been set up by local boxing champion Kieran Gething and his family. Situated on Hatherleigh Place, the new facility will look to engage with the whole community as an all-inclusive environment, providing boxing and fitness classes for everyone.
A former Welsh Senior Elite Champion with 35 wins from amateur bouts, Kieran is now quickly rising up the professional ranks with 11 wins from 15 fights including two knockouts, with his most recent win coming at Cardiff’s Vale Sport Arena on March 12.
Speaking to the Chronicle about his new business venture, Kieran Gething said: “The aim of the gym is to provide facilities for the whole community.
“Boxing can be so beneficial to young people and hopefully this new facility will provide greater opportunities for youngsters to become involved in the sport.
“We will do this by looking to provide opportunities in the area for all kinds of people to practice not only boxing but other sports and general fitness.”
As well as acting as a place where young people can come and learn the sport of boxing, the gym will run numerous classes for people of all ages and backgrounds, including women, children and people from ethnic minorities.
Kieran, who is also a qualified personal trainer, is even looking into holding special mother and baby classes in the gym as well as classes for the elderly, and will also provide facilities and training programmes for people with learning difficulties.
The gym will be open five days a week, running a number of morning classes along with personal training from 4pm onwards in the evenings.
Kieran was first contacted about opening a gym in Abergavenny four years ago when he was approached through his brother by Welsh Boxing, who had themselves been contacted by an organisation from Monmouthshire looking to set up a new boxing club and gym facility in the area.
With backing from Monmouthshire councillors, Welsh Boxing and Sport Wales, Kieran was able to push forward with the plans and after several meetings at the beginning of the year was able to finalise a lease for the location of the gym in February.
Following the signing of the lease, as a way of helping raise further funds to support the gym Kieran set up a GoFundMe page online to help provide money for kit and other gym facilites to help get the gym up and running.
After raising awareness of the fundraising page online, Kieran has received great support from the local community with over £700 raised in just over seven weeks.
With Sport Wales kindly agreeing to match any money raise from donations, Kieran hopes to eventually raise up to £10,000 which can go towards purchasing a mini-bus to take club members to boxing competitions and other boxing events.
Kieran added: “I have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the local community in helping support the gym.
“I have had great support from the local community with my boxing career and I think at this point in my career it is time to give something back to the community, and I hope that the gym will make a massive difference to people’s lives and provide opportunities for everyone to become more engaged with boxing and fitness in general.”
