Crickhowell RFC - 46
Newport Whiteheads - 5
FOLLOWING on the heels of their excellent performance against Beaufort, Crickhowell built on their run of good form with a thundering six try win over Newport Whiteheads at Parc Broyd. The game opened at a cracking pace, and when James Webb broke from a scrum on his own 22 metre line he found solid support from both backs and forwards.
It was Tom Powell, who had hooked the Ball in the initial scrum, before proceeding to run 70 metres up field to take the scoring pass, which was then converted by Adam Howell.
Riding the crest of a wave, the inspired Crickhowell backs attacked at every opportunity, and it wasn't long before David Mullholland was put into space by James Ralph.
The full-back made ground and then handed to Ben Withey who Scored. Adam Howells again converted.
Crickhowell continued to press with Adam Howell kicking a couple of penalty goals, and then wing man David Rees got over after some quality passing by James Ralph and Adam Howells, with Adam Howells again converting.
After such a blistering first half, Crickhowell took their foot off the gas. This was a signal for Whiteheads to pick their heads up and they scored a well-constructed try of their own.
This stirred Crickhowell back into action, and tries followed thick and fast with man of the match Ed Jones, loose-head prop Colin Pickervance and David Rees all grounding.
Martin Smith converted all three in what was an excellent all round performance by Crickhowell, who gained a maximum bonus points score win that increases their lead at the top of Division Six East by three points.
Next Saturday Crickhowell are back in action at Parc Broyd, as they take on Trefil in the Welsh Districts Cup. Kick-off is at 2pm.
