POLICE are still awaiting news on when convicted Aberystwyth rapist Benjamin Griffiths, arrested in Germany two weeks ago, will face an extradition hearing. Griffiths (pictured), aged 63 and formerly of Flat 2, 3 Custom House Street, was arrested in Germany after going on the run before a Crown Court judge could sentence him for child rape and indecent assault offences. In his absence, the former teacher, was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment, after being found guilty of raping a nine-year-old girl, and four charges of indecent assault, in a trial at Chester Crown Court in December. After going on the run, he was finally arrested in a hotel in Karlsruhe, Germany, on 6 April. Griffiths had his dog with him at the time of his arrest. But police will not confirm reports that he was arrested after using his own name to apply for a dog licence. A spokesperson for Dyfed Powys Police said: "We will not comment on the circumstances of Griffiths's arrest. "We are now awaiting information on the date of an extradition hearing - we understand that a date has yet to be set." The rapist is now being held in custody in Germany awaiting extradition formalities, which he intends to fight. His victim, originally from Machynlleth, was just nine when she was raped by Griffiths some five years ago. Crown Court Judge Roger Dutton issued a warrant for Griffiths' arrest after he failed to attend the end of his two-week trial. And the same judge has asked for Griffiths to be brought before him on his return to Britain.
