This summer one of Wales’ most unique family run businesses, Webbs of Crickhowell, celebrates 80 years since it was founded.
‘’Webbs’’, as it is known, is now in its second and third generation, run by the sons and grandsons of the founder, Herbert Webb. What has today grown into a department store set on two sites started from very humble origins as a paraffin round serving Crickhowell and the surrounding areas.
This later grew into an ironmonger’s shop following the war years, and continues to expand in new directions to this day, with new additions such as upholstery, divan beds, occasional and cabinet furniture from many of the leading names, including Duresta, Vispring, and Old Charm to name just a few.
Their extensive range of goods continue into garden furniture, all types of garden machinery including lawnmowers and hedge trimmers, white goods – washing machines, fridges, dishwashers, from brands like Bosch, Siemens, Miele, NEF, and Smeg, and a complete range of household goods, add to an ever evolving range of products.
The continued success of Webbs has been built upon solid foundations, instilled by its founder Herbert, valuing foresight, determination, and good humour, combined with selling the best quality products at a fair price, whilst offering the kind of service for which Webbs has become renowned. Stories abound about their service, are often retold, people have found themselves in a domestic crisis with broken down appliances, gone to Webbs and had a new replacement appliance delivered and fitted inside an hour!
Every day of the week, the three brothers, John, Richard, and Michael alongside Peter (John’s son) and James (Richard’s son), can be seen around the business offering the same levels of enthusiasm and dedication in their own inimitable way to their customers, who have come to respect their knowledge and honesty.
What once started out as a local Crickhowell business now draws customers from across the UK, with deliveries, not only in the immediate mid and South Wales locality, but further afield to London and the south east, southwest England, but even as far as Scotland and France!
Despite the success and continued growth experienced over the previous 80 years, complacency has never allowed to set in, with ideas and plans always being forged to meet new challenges.
Now that the dedicated bedroom showroom, found on Standard Street in Crickhowell, has firmly established itself offering the customers a superb range of the best quality beds and bedroom furniture, the next phase of Webbs development is in its embryonic stages with the planned first phase expansion of the main store following the acquisition of an adjacent building due to commence in late July.
To mark this special milestone Webbs are holding a Summer Sale as part of their celebrations, with further events planned, so now is a good time to find yourself a bargain and sample some of the uniqueness of Webbs!
