Local artist Elin Blake has taken inspiration from the pupils of Deri View to transform a dowdy foyer into a walk-thru work of art.

Deputy head teacher, Tim Kane, said “We wanted a project for the children that involved showing Abergavenny’s place in Wales.

“It started with a meeting to come up with some ideas, then Elin came into school to run a series of workshops. We also took the children on trips to places like Abergavenny Castle and Big Pit and the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal.

“All the children got involved - from reception up to Year 6. They wanted the mural to include the red kites from the Deri that hover above the school every day, the paragliders that fly over in summer, famous people linked to the town like Olympic medallist Becky James and so on.

“Elin listened to all their ideas then used them to create the mural. It’s made a drab part of the school into a real talking point.”
