Support continues to rise for Peter Fox’s local produce Bill, after he recently secured the backing from Penderyn Distillery.
A raft of organisations—including sustainable oyster farm Marine Aquaculture—have thrown their full support behind the Food Wales Bill, which aims to implement robust measures to strengthen local produce (food and drink) in Wales.
Recently Mr Fox, with the Member of the Senedd for South Wales Central, Joel James MS, visited Penderyn Distillery to learn more of what it takes to promote local produce.
And, after explaining the key points of the Bill, Mr Fox was delighted to secure the backing of the whisky business’s CEO, Stephen Davies.
Mr Fox, who is the Senedd Member for Monmouth, said:
“Wales has so much to offer to the wider world and that’s why we visited, what is arguably, one of most iconic of Welsh exports – Penderyn—to learn more about the company. Penderyn has a wide range of high-quality and immensely popular products which it successfully showcases right across the world. This is a success story that needs to be emulated by other companies.
“The meeting also gave me the opportunity to outline the importance of why we need to safeguard local produce for generations to come, especially in light of precarious international events.
“My Bill will provide a crucial framework for tackling some of the most pressing issues and that is why I am delighted Penderyn Whisky supports my efforts.”
Mr Davies, who has worked for Penderyn since 2005, said:
“We have been building premium Welsh brands for over 20 years as a business and this has led to creation of brand exports, food tourism here in Wales and significant job creation in the food and drink sector across Wales. We are keen to see Welsh Government create the conditions that support future growth for the food and drink industry in Wales.”
And Mr James added:
"I was delighted to be able to join Peter to visit Penderyn, in support of his Food Wales Bill and showcase one of the many local food and drink gems we have here in the South Wales Central region.
“Penderyn is an exemplar of what local business could be and it’s a source local pride that this quality Welsh product can be found in all corners of the globe, whilst retaining its South Walian heritage and local business ethos."
