Wye Valley TV presenter Kate Humble’s latest offering is a guide to living more sustainably at home - from growing your own food to attracting bees, or making your own pond to putting a planter or barrel on a balcony.
Good Life, Green Life, which aired on Channel 5 this week, and is on My5 catch-up sees Kate at her Tintern home and in the local neighbourhood exploring how we can all live a greener life, starting in our own back yard.
The ‘Escape to the Farm’ and ‘Country Life for Half the Price’ presenter, who also owns the Humble by Nature farm and rural skills centre near Penallt, says doing your bit to help save the planet can also increase your own sense of wellbeing.
On her TV shows, Kate has put sustainability at the heart of everything she does at the farm and her smallholding home, and has found that rather than feeling like a chore or sacrifice it has actually brought her joy.
And in this one-off special, she shares some simple ways to make your life greener.
In the show, she meets several eco wizards, including a pond expert, a woman who builds a pergola out of willow cuttings, a bee expert, and a forager who helps her concoct a recipe for roadside honeysuckle, elderflower and wild cherry gin cocktails.
She can also be spotted wild-swimming with outdoor specialist Angela Jones in the Wye near Monmouth’s old railway bridge.
Having moved from London to the Wye Valley in 2007 and created her working farm and rural skills centre, she and husband Ludo have embraced a greener lifestyle.
And Kate believes everyone can do their bit, no matter how small or big their garden or balcony.
The show starts out with small, doable tasks at first, such as using an old agricultural tank or sink to make a wildlife pond, before moving on to more ambitious projects like building the willow pergola.
She also touches on growing your own salad and other foodstuffs.
Kate has previously said of her rural idyll: “I wake up every morning feeling pretty bloody lucky.”
