County Councillor Giles Howard, who has represented the Llanfoist Fawr ward since May, has pressed Monmouthshire Council’s Highways section for a meeting to discuss road safety in the area, following representations made by residents.
Cllr Howard said that concerns about road safety had cropped up repeatedly during the council election campaign, noting that from Llanfoist village and past the A465 overbridge there is nowhere safe to cross, traffic speeds are high, and junctions are continuously busy.
“In particular I’ve had complaints about Merthyr Road and Gypsy Lane, including the mini roundabout, and right through to Llanellen, where it’s ridiculous that there’s no pedestrian crossing at all,” said Cllr Howard.
“I’ve met and heard from residents in both villages and the surrounding area, about inadequacies of road markings, signage, poor layout and of regular near misses, so it’s about time that residents’ longstanding concerns were acknowledged and that a full safety review is carried out.
“Both young and old feel that they are running the gauntlet when they choose to walk and this, in my opinion, has been exacerbated by the ongoing development which will only continue to generate more traffic. We’re not willing to wait any longer, or for someone to be knocked down to prove our point,” he said.
