CHILDREN at an Abergavenny primary school have just completed another blanket to send to an African charity to keep babies warm at night.

The pupils from the knitting club at Llantilio Pertholey School have completed squares which have been sewn together to make the blanket which is for the Chavuma Mission in Zambia which gives new mothers a blanket, clothes and other items when they give birth. The school established the links with the charity through retired voluntary librarian Mrs Joan Smith who used to teach at the school. The Mission is supported by her church Whitefield Presbyterian and blankets are often donated to the knitting club by members of St Teilo’s Church in Llantilio Pertholey.

The last batch came from Mrs Carol Peacock whose three children attended the school. A few years ago the club won £100 in a competition run by Monmouthshire County Council for intergenerational projects. The club is run by grandmothers Mrs Carol Howells and Mrs Lesley Flynn, whose grandchildren attended the school, together with teacher Mrs Tracey Pugh whose idea it was to form the club more than 15 years ago to preserve the dying art of knitting. Both boys and girls join in once a week, learning to knit and completing squares.
