Councillor Maureen Powell is to be Abergavenny's new mayor for the coming year.

Councillor Powell was nominated for the role by Councillor John Prosser in a town council meeting last week, when he expressed his admiration for her work during her time as a councillor, and her passion for ensuring that she gives time to very single one of her constituents.

Councillor Prosser said that during her initial campaign to become a councillor she took the time to knock an every single household in her ward, and said her enthusiasm for the job had not waned making her a 'fine' candidate for the role of mayor.

This nomination was accepted by Councillor Powell, and seconded by Councillor Stephen Horrell.

Current mayor Martin Hickman said Councillor Powell gives tirelessly to her role as a councillor, and said she would make an excellent mayor.

Councillor Roger Harris echoed these comments, and said that Councillor Powell would be joining a great line-up of successful women, with the councillors of the past decade now being split completely 50:50 for men and women.

Councillor Powell accepted the nomination, and said that she hopes to do her best to fill the shoes of Martin, and praised him for his term as mayor.

Councillor Powell will officially take on the role in May.
