Monmouth MP David Davies has received ‘serious’ death threats following his outspoken remarks on child migrants last week.
The Conservative called for dental checks on migrant arrivals from Calais, after questioning the age of some migrants who were pictured in the news.
Mr Davies said that two death threats have been taken seriously, and reported to police.
“I stand by absolutely everything that I’ve said.
“If someone looks significantly older than what they claim then it’s not unethical to ask them for further examination.
“I think that children should be brought in but you have some people that will lie about their age,” he said.
Mr Davies said he was not against child migration, but had concerns adults were taking the place of genuine children with greater need.
“You have to ask why these older-looking ‘teenagers’ were shown coming into the country first when there are more vulnerable people looking to seek asylum.
“There have been cases where people claiming to be of a certain age are actually in their 20s and 30s and get put into situations with children when they shouldn’t be.”
The furore erupted on social media soon after Mr Davies tweeted his hope that ‘British hospitality wasn’t being abused’. The comments led to a heated appearance on Good Morning Britain with Piers Morgan, who Mr Davies accused of denying him the right to put forward his opinion.
The Tory backbencher then wrote a letter to ITV bosses, complaining about his treatment, adding that a ‘student on work experience on a regional hospital radio station would have done a better job’ than Mr Morgan.
Commenting on the letter, Mr Davies said, “They had asked me to go on several times at short notice, and I had refused each time.
“In the end, I agreed to go on if they agreed to give me a chance but if you see the footage I hardly got a chance to speak until the end.
“I am more than happy to engage with anyone as long as I have the chance to give my views, which I still maintain 100 per cent.”
