Crickhowell High School is delighted to be celebrating outstanding A-Level results which are significantly above the All Wales and Powys average.

More than 200 students sat examinations at AS and A2 this summer in more than 30 courses with 100% pass rate at A* to E for A2 students, including a significant increase in the numbers of higher grades being awarded.

At A2 17% of all grades awarded were at A* with 42% of grades A*/A, 63% A* - B and 85% A* - C.

Deputy Headteacher Geraint Williams said the increased success at A/A* reflected the talent and hard work of CHS’s ‘fantastic students’ and also the dedication of their teachers.

“More than 87% of our students achieved at least an A or an A* in one or more of their subjects,” he said. “97% of our students who applied to University gained entry to their first or insurance choice at higher education.”

Courses and destinations include English Literature at Cambridge, Veterinary Medicine at the Royal Veterinary College in London, History at University College London, Dance in Leeds, Music Performance at the Royal Northern College of Music, Law at Cardiff, International Politics at Aberystwyth and Robotics at Plymouth.

A number of students have been successful in gaining places on prestigious apprenticeship schemes and others have gained international placements for one year.

AS results were also impressive this year and the retention rate to Year 13 is very high. Mr Williams added, “The number of applications to join our Sixth Form is growing and as a result we are extending our sixth form offer with a wider range of courses available.

“We are incredibly proud of all our Sixth Form students and appreciate that their excellent results reflect not only their dedication but also the considerable support of their parents and families.

“Whilst some students are going on to very prestigious university courses we also have a number of students with very particular additional learning needs who have achieved good passes in all their A levels and we are equally proud of their achievements.”

Headteacher, Jackie Parker, expressed the joy of all staff in seeing students achieve such important academic milestones.

“It is a privilege to work with such wonderful students and to enable them to achieve such remarkable success in very challenging examinations.

“We are very proud of their academic excellence but equally we value their achievements as individuals and as very impressive young adults ready to take on the next important step in their lives.

“I have every confidence that they will go on to excel in whatever career they choose and make a very positive difference in society,” she said.
