The forthcoming National Eisteddfod has presented the members of the fund raising committee with the opportunity to invite well known musicians and speakers to the town.

The latest in these series of events will take place on Friday, July 15, only a fortnight before the start of the Eisteddfod, when the well known broadcaster and newsreader Huw Edwards will present his views on "What’s News" at King Henry VIII School at 7.30 pm.

David Roberts, chairman of the local appeals committee said, "I have been absolutely delighted with the willingness of all of these people to visit us and to give freely of their services in order to help us promote the first National Eisteddfod to be held in Abergavenny for over 100 years.

“All it took was a letter of invitation and within a few days Huw sent a very positive reply and we then fixed a date for him to come to talk to us.

“He is an excellent speaker and, as one would expect from a man in his position, has many interesting tales to tell. He has an insight into world events and how they are presented through the media that the general public can not readily obtain.

“It promises to be a very interesting evening and we are very fortunate that Huw has found the time in his very busy schedule to come here. Like all our other invited guest his roots are still firmly planted in Wales, wherever in the world his work may take him, and that Hiraeth stills gives them that willingness to return and contribute at home and to promote Wales in a very positive light to the world.

“Let’s give him a big Abergavenny welcome."

Tickets for the event cost £15 (£5 for students) and are available from the Borough Theatre box office on 01873 850805.
