The 100th tree to commemorate the war dead of Abergavenny will be planted in the copse under the Castle walls this Saturday (April 29) at 1pm.
The event will be attended by the Mayor of Abergavenny Councillor Chris Woodhouse, former County Councillor Doug Edwards, who has been supporting the Friends of Castle Meadows’ fund-raising efforts throughout his years in office, and a member of the Gwent Western Front Association.
Locals brownies, who have been responsible for planting other native species of trees in the copse in recent months, have also been invited along - and the organisers hope many members of the public will join the official party for the ceremony, where a bugler from Abergavenny Borough Band will play The Last Post.
Volunteers with the Friends of Castle Meadows have worked hard to clear invasive plants from the copse in order to create a walk-through for the public.
They have also been responsible for providing new, bilingual interpretative panels at the main entrances to the Meadows, explaining about the flora and fauna to be found there and the history of the site.
