PLANS to help Monmouthshire recover from the Covid-19 pandemic will be one of the main priorities for the new leaders of Monmouthshie County Council (MCC).

Councillor Richard John and Councillor Sara Jones, the new Leader and Deputy Leader of MCC have set out their priorities for the new administration.

The council’s strategy for the forthcoming year was presented at last Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting (June 9) and set out an ambitious agenda to make a difference to the lives of Monmouthshire residents.

The plan has a particular focus on education and social care as well as the wellbeing of local communities by supporting businesses in their economic recovery, investing in community facilities such as leisure centres and promoting opportunities for children and young people.

There is also a clear commitment to improve local infrastructure by fixing the roads, rolling out 20mph zones and investing in safe walking and cycling routes.

Cllr Richard John said, “We’re really proud of our county, but we have a shared commitment to do all we can to make Monmouthshire an even better place to live, work and spend leisure time.

‘‘We want Monmouthshire to be an ambitious enterprising county, with vibrant bustling high streets and plenty of opportunities for young people.

“This new leadership team has a sense of urgency to get things done.

‘‘We have big ambitions for our county to fight for more investment in the things that will make a difference to the lives of our residents.

‘‘But we also understand the need to get our roads fixed, improve safety for walkers, cyclists and motorists by rolling out more active travel routes and 20mph zones and working with others to ensure better phone and broadband connectivity.

‘‘Above all, we want Monmouthshire to be a place that everyone is proud to call home.”

Cllr Sara Jones said, “It’s been a tough 18 months for everyone.

‘‘As we emerge from the Covid restrictions, we want to do all we can to support residents in improving their own wellbeing, by investing in our leisure centres and maximising opportunities to enjoy our beautiful natural environment.

‘‘We will do all we can to back Monmouthshire businesses, including through our Shop Local campaign, as well as supporting the hospitality industry and promoting Monmouthshire as a destination for staycations.

“This strategy is centred on bringing people safely back together by supporting our neighbourhoods and communities to feel safe and to enjoy the opportunities our county has to offer, particularly over the summer

months.”
