TRIBUTES have been paid to Ray Griffiths, the man affectionately known as 'Mr Gwent Central League' who has died following a long illness.

The former secretary of the Gwent Central League, as well as a well known referee and sports reporter, Ray died on Wednesday, July 17 following a long battle against illness.

One of nature's gentleman, the Gwent County FA described him as an 'outstanding servant of football in Gwent' who would be remembered for his 'dedication to football and the consistent amount of hard work he put into the Gwent Central League'.

Well known in the sporting arena, retired civil servant Ray passed his referee examination in 1957 at the age of 17 and refereed in the Newport & District League, Pontypool and District League, which went on to becomeNorth East Gwent League and finally the Gwent Central League.

Ray also officiated in the Mon Senior League, Gwent Premier League, The Welsh League and The Mid-Week Football League.

In 1981 he became assistant secretary of the Gwent Central League and a year later became league secretary.

He was elected on to The Gwent County Football Association in 2004."

 

"Affectionately known as "Mr Gwent Central League" he performed his football duties with heart and soul dedication and a skill which reflected his decades of experience and knowledge of the game. He was a lovely guy who had time for everyone and such a zest for life. He was a unique and wonderful character," said a spokesman for Gwent County FA.

 

The funeral of Ray Griffiths will take place at The Priory Church of St Mary's (known as St Mary's) at Usk on Thursday, August 1 at 2:30pm with burial at St Mary's following after at approx 3:15pm.
