CHRONICLE weatherman Jonathan Powell has warned of heavy rain and strong winds as Storm Jonas hits Monmouthshire today.

"An active frontal system associated with Storm Jonas arrives across the region, looking set to deliver up to 40 millimetres of rain over a spell lasting into Wednesday afternoon," said Jonathan

"Apart from the risk of localised flooding and difficult driving conditions on the roads, with surface spray, standing pools or water and reduced visibility, wind strengths will edge 50 mph during the early part of Tuesday afternoon.

"Wednesday sees a gradual improvement, but another band of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds will arrive on Friday, delivering another bout of wet and windy weather," he warned.Railway warning issued - check before you travelNetwork Rail today advised train passengers to check before they travel as Wales, northwest England and west Scotland brace for the arrival of Storm Jonas.Forecasters predict snow will turn to rain when the storm, which has wreaked havoc in America, makes landfall after crossing the Atlantic.As Jonas approaches Network Rail's frontline teams are on alert ready to tackle any railway problems the storm may cause.A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "We are preparing for the worst while of course hoping for the best. "With a lot of rain expected to fall on already-saturated areas, flooding is likely. And in some places repairs are still taking place following damage from the last storms. "As you'd expect we're drafting in additional frontline staff to tackle any potential problems that may arise.
