ABERGAVENNY darts ace, Craig Gilchrist, is through to the finals of the Worthington’s 2016 Darts Champion of Champions event where he will compete against players from across the country for a £5,000 top prize.

Thirty-four-year-old healthcare worker Craig earned his place in the finals, which are organised by Red Dragon Darts with the additional sponsorship of Molson Coors, by winning a qualifying event heat held at Abergavenny Labour Club. He topped a field of hopefuls, hitting a 180 and a double 16 finish to beat Andrew Hulbert 2-0 in the heat final.

The Worthington’s 2016 Champion of Champions finals, which take place at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff on August 28, will see 256 darts players – all winners of qualifying events held around the country – compete for a total prize fund of £18,500 in a best of three legs format which mirrors that of the iconic News of the World competition.

Craig, whose darts nickname is ‘Ironfist’, plays club darts for Belmont in the Abergavenny Darts League and is no stranger to competing at the highest level. He won the Barry Open earlier this year and has qualified for the Winmau World Masters in December.

“I’ve playing really well and hope to be able to take my recent form in to the Worthington’s Champion of Champions finals,” he says. “I’m looking forward to testing myself against some of the best players in the game such as last year’s winner Gerwyn Price, Wes Newton and Barrie Bates.”
