Abergavenny Petanque Club’s President Clive Howells opened their recent AGM by thanking all for attending.

After receiving apologies for absence the minutes of the 2017 AGM were formally accepted as an accurate record of proceedings.

He thanked the executive Committee, Secretary Jean Ford, Treasurer David Bloor, Club Captain Gareth Howells and the three League Captains, Norman Davies (Blues), John Woodier (Reds) and David Bloor (Gold) for their work during the season.

Howells informed those present, “On Sunday, January 14 we hosted the Welsh Petanque Associations Cup for Club’s Competition it was a very cold and long day of competition starting at 8am and concluding at 5pm, the WPA were very grateful for the use of our facilities as it can accommodate up to 16 games at a time.

“In the BIG league and Cup Competitions, we had varying degrees of success. Our friendly games against Monmouth away on July 8 and home on August 19 were again enjoyable occasions that will hopefully continue. Our Club Competitions Singles on September 9, Doubles on September 16 and Triples on September 23 were competitive and enjoyable occasions with the weather being kind to us for them all.

Our Monthly Melee games have been good fun and I would wish to thank David Bloor for the time he gives in organising these games and for updating our Website.”

Howells added, “Congratulation to Mathew Howells on becoming the Welsh Petanque Singles Champion. He went on to represent Wales at the European Championships in Turin Italy in October, and Andy Pook went along as his Coach. Club Captain Gareth Howells, Ruth Pook and myself went to support him. It was a very interesting indoor Piste with a good covering of large gravel, Mathew performed very well reaching the Quarter Finals of the Nations Cup.

Our Christmas Dinner was held last Saturday (December 8) in the Grofield pub and was well attended and a good evening was had by all.

Finally my thanks to all that helped with preparing the Piste, cleaning the Pavilion, providing and serving the buffets, teas, coffee, etc during the season.

David Bloor presented the Club’s accounts and financial Report showing a healthy balance sheet which was adopted unanimously. He advised the executive’s decision to keep the membership fees for 2019 the same as last year at £23.

Club Captain Gareth Howells thanked the team Captains and all the players for their endeavours during the season which was interesting as all the teams were in Division Three. This made for some very competitive matches between the teams with one going for promotion another mid table and one fighting to remain in Division Three.

The Reds under the Captaincy of John Woodier had a consistent season, winning 14, drawing three and losing three, (56 points) finishing second and therefore promoted to Division Two for next season.

The Blues finished sixth, winning four, drawing 10 and losing three (39 points) and will remain in Division Three.

The Golds had a disappointing season ending second from bottom, winning four, drawing five and losing 11 ( 29 points ) and have been relegated to Division Four.
