ABERGAVENNY fitness instructor Lorna Shaw recently represented Great Britain at the European Triathlon Championships held in Ibiza.
Lorna who works at Abergavenny Leisure Centre was competing in the 55 to 59 age group class for the AG Duathlon Sprint, which consists of a run of five kilometres, followed by a 20 kilometres bike ride, and concludes with another two-and-a-half kilometres run.
Lorna positioned herself in the middle of the pack from the start, finishing the first run in 11th place.
On the bike, she cycled at a consistent pace, but was still overtaken by two other riders, and completed this stage in 13th place.
Finally, on the second and shorter run, Lorna maintained her form and fitness, and held off all comers to finish in 13th place, and, in doing so, completed a remarkable personal best by shaving over eight minutes off her previous best time, which was an improvement of over 10 percent. Overall, she finished 70th out of 150 competitors across all ages.
Over the years, Lorna has competed in various major Duathlon championships, including the World Championships in 2005, where she finished 21st. To date, her best ever result has been sixth place in the European Championships at Edinburgh in 2007, and, only two years ago in 2016, she finished seventh in the same championship when it was held in Germany. She shows no sign of stopping, so watch this space.
