You don’t need a weatherman to tell you which way the wind blows but they can come in handy if you’re looking for a bit of financial backing, as the ladies of Abergavenny Hockey Club, proudly supported by Chronicle meteorologist Jonathan Powell, know all too well.
The ladies have enjoyed a scorching start to their 2015-16 league campaign.
The first team are proudly sitting top of their division with five wins out of the six matches played to date and hope to consistently keep churning out the results at they seek the promotion that agonizingly eluded them last year.
The second team has started in its second league season. Hoping to prove that last years mid table finish was not a one-off, the team have continued to put together quality performances and feed the first team with experienced players. Close losses against the top teams in the division are no disgrace and the team put together a great performance last weekend to secure a 5-1 victory.
To develop and maintain the quality in the ladies section, the club runs an active Development Team which aims to further develop the younger players in the club whilst providing an avenue for anyone else wanting to give the sport a go. Whilst played as fully competitive matches, the spirit and ethos of the Development team is for players to be able to experience hockey without the ultra competitive element introduced by a formal league structure.
The solid state of the ladies section of the club can be mapped almost to the date, to the support offered to the section by local business Zenith McGarty. With their support now in its fourth year, the company has seen the club grow from running just the one team, to the tentative introduction of a development team, to the running of three teams.
Director Jonathan Powell has been keen to support the development of the game from its grass roots level and is proud to see his investment bearing fruit. Providing a well thought out route for players to be able to develop their skills at whatever level suits them, is a great way to build good spirit on and off the club, and all players are grateful for the support offered by Zenith McGarty.
The Ladies section train every Thursday between 8:00 and 9:30pm at the Leisure Centre astroturf. The club is keen to attract new players, irrespective of age or experience, so why not give it a go.
