LAST weekend saw Abergavenny Hockey Club’s Ladies First Team travel to West Wales to face Newcastle Emlyn.
Having previously lost to the team earlier this season, Abergavenny had a lot to prove.
They started the game well, maintained possession, and gained territory. After unluckily being denied goals from two short corners, Abergavenny’s Helen Williams found the back of the net from open play.
Unfortunately, Newcastle Emlyn forced Abergavenny back into their own half and after some excellent Aber defending, Newcastle Emlyn were awarded a short corner, from which they managed to equalise.
In the second half, Abergavenny defended efficiently, denying Newcastle Emlyn anymore goal scoring opportunities. Despite Abergavenny not being able to find the back of the net to take the lead, they were pleased with their performance.
Abergavenny Ladies Second Team played Gwent on Saturday, and played a very defensive game, especially in the first half, which led to Gwent’s experienced players scoring goals.
At half-time Abergavenny switched the formation of the team with an extra midfielder and the attackers staying high on the pitch, which gave Abergavenny more opportunities and more of an attacking half.
On Sunday they were back in action with a long awaited cup match against Bridgend.
Aber used the opportunity to field some of their newer players against a tough outfit who are currently sitting top of the league.
Bridgend went on to win 6-0 but the Abergavenny ladies battled to the end and can keep their heads held high after a tough weekend.
Elsewhere, Abergavenny Men’s played Newent on home turf this Saturday and enjoyed a successful 8-4 win.
