LAST week the inaugural final of the Abergavenny Squash Box League took place at the Abergavenny Leisure Centre between Ellis Lawrence and Gareth-Hughes Jones, who had both seen off two tenacious opponents in Anthony Squire and Mike Logan in the semi-finals.
The match was an extremely close affair, and, although only three sets were played, it lasted just short of 30 minutes, with Ellis Lawrence triumphant, winning 11-9, 11-8, and 11-9. Most of the rallies ebbed and flowed between the two players, and the spectators, of whom there were many, were treated to an excellent match.
The trophy was presented to Ellis by the Abergavenny Squash Club chairman, Marc Winchester (pictured), who said, “I hope that this final is the start of a tradition at both the squash club and the leisure centre for competitive squash across the town for all comers in future years.”
Next year’s competition will start once again in September this year, and is open not only to the Abergavenny Squash Club, but also to all squash players across Abergavenny and beyond.
