ABERGAVENNY played an MBA league game at Rhymney Gwent last Saturday. Unfortunately, they were defeated on three of the four rinks to lose by 99 shots to 67.
The only victory for Abergavenny was the rink of John Beaton. They fought back from an eight shot deficit and then scored six shots on the final four ends to secure victory by 18 shots to 17. Matthew Vale’s rink were 16 shots behind but then reduced this over the final five ends, eventually losing by 29 shots to 22. Jack Vale’s rink reduced their deficit from 13 shots by scoring seven on the final two ends to lose by 22 shots to 16. Anthony Moriarty’s rink had no answer to some excellent bowling by all four members of the Rhymney rink. Although the Abergavenny rink scored on eight ends, they were outscored by their opponent in losing by 31 shots to 11.
Abergavenny Ladies have played two games in the past week. Last Tuesday they played a league game at Caerleon. In a very close contest, they were just unable to secure victory, losing by one shot 54 shots to 53. Abergavenny had one successful rink, one that lost by just one shot and one that was defeated by eight shots.
The victorious rink for Abergavenny was that of Ceri Clark. They were all square after nine ends but then took charge of the game in the second half to win by 24 shots to 14. Sian Phillips’ rink was leading by two shots after nine ends. Their opponents outscored them over the remainder of the game to win by 22 shots to 19. Judy Belli’s rink had a nine shot deficit after nine ends. They then matched their opponents during the last nine ends but could not reduce the deficit, losing by 18 shots to 10.
Last Friday Abergavenny Bowls Club hosted an Association game played between East Monmouthshire Bowling Association and Newport and District BA. The East Monmouthshire team was made up of members from local teams including Abergavenny, Bailey Park, Caldicot, Chepstow, Crickhowell and Gilwern. On an excellent evening for bowls, the Newport and District team proved too strong for East Monmouthshire, winning on four of the six rinks to win the game by a comfortable margin.
This week Abergavenny play a rearranged MBA game at Bedwelty Park, a GBL game at Caerleon and an EMBA league game against Monmouth at Avenue Road. In addition, Abergavenny Ladies welcome Caldicot to Avenue Road for a league game.
