Abergavenny Bowls Club opened the curtains on the 2019 season last Saturday with the ceremonial first bowl.
Thirty-eight members enjoyed a cold but sunny start to proceedings with the first bowl of the season bowled by Club President Robert Poynter, who is playing his 50th season as a member of the club. A friendly but competitive game was played by all the members present.
This season Abergavenny Bowls Club will be playing league games in the Monmouthshire Bowling Association Division Two, the Gwent Bowls League and South Wales & Monmouthshire Ladies Bowls Association. In addition there will also be ten friendly games for the ladies team and another ten games for a mixed team, playing against other mixed teams in the area. This will give all members the opportunity to play in at least 25 games throughout the season.
This weekend, the club will begin their busy start to their competitive season with an MBA game against Rhymney Gwent on Saturday at Avenue Road and a GBL game at Pontypool Park/Girling on Sunday.
Anyone interested in trying the game of bowls would be welcome at the club, where there is equipment and coaches available to help introduce people to the sport. Anyone interested in trying the sport should initially contact John Whomersley on 01873 850924 or Secretary Jackie Evans on 01873 853301.
