Abergavenny played their Welsh cup game at Bedwas & Trethomas last Saturday. Unfortunately they won on one rink only, losing the game by 100 shots to 67.

The successful rink for Abergavenny was that of Matthew Vale. Although seven shots behind at the halfway stage of the game’ they then took the initiative from the opposition rink to score 17 shots, conceding only four, to win by 23 shots to 17.

John Vale’s rink was ten shots behind after six ends. They then scored 15 shots to take a three shot lead but the Bedwas & Trethomas rink re-established their control to go on and win by 23 shots to 20.

After the first five ends Ieuan Jenkins’ rink conceded 13 shots in three ends. This led to the opposition establishing control of the game, allowing them to go on and win by 31 shots to 15. Peter Stahl’s rink was level after seven ends but then conceded 13 shots over the next five ends which gave the Bedwas & Trethomas rink the impetus to go on and win by 29 shots to nine.

The GBL team travelled to Blaina for a league game. They were well beaten on two of the three rinks in losing the game by 46 shots to 37. The Abergavenny rink of Bill Belli was the only victorious rink. They were in control from the start and won the game by 21 shots to eight. It was the other way round on the rinks of Jeff Gibbon and Derek Bailey. Both could not get into their games and lost by 18 shots to 10 and 21 shots to eight respectively.

Abergavenny Ladies were recently the hosts for a South Wales & Monmouthshire County Pairs competition at Avenue Road.

Fifteen teams from clubs throughout the county participated in this event. The two pairs of Wendy Parker and Sian Phillips, along with Judy Belli and Mary Evans from Abergavenny Ladies were successful on the day and progressed through to the semi-final stages.

These will be played later in the season.

This has also been matched by the Abergavenny rink of Sian Phillips, Wendy Parker, Mary Evans and Diane Bevan, winning through to the County semi-final which will be played in August.

The Ladies also played a league game at St Julian’s last week. They won on two of the three rinks to record a victory. The rinks of Wendy Parker and Sian Phillips were successful but the rink of Judy Belli suffered a narrow defeat.

This week there will be an EMBA game against local rivals Bailey Park, an MBA game when Beaufort will visit Avenue Road and a GBL match against Pontypool/Girling also at Avenue Road. In addition Abergavenny Ladies welcome Beechwood to Avenue Road for a league game.
